أبريل 12, 2023Mahalabia is a famous dessert in Libyan cuisine, which is a simple dessert made from milk, sugar, cornstarch, and water. Nuts can be added to it to add a different flavor and increase its nutritional value. Here's how to make Libyan mahalabia with nuts:
Ingredients:
- 3 cups of milk
- 1/2 cup of water
- 3 tablespoons of sugar
- 3 tablespoons of cornstarch
- 1/2 cup of chopped nuts (almonds, pistachios, and walnuts)
- 1 teaspoon of rose water (optional)
- 1 teaspoon of liquid vanilla (optional)
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, mix the milk and sugar on medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.
2. In another bowl, mix the cornstarch and water until the cornstarch dissolves.
3. When the milk starts to boil, slowly add the cornstarch and water mixture while continuously stirring with a whisk.
4. Continuously stir the mixture on medium heat until it becomes thick.
5. Add the rose water and a dash of cinnamon if desired.
6. Pour the mahalabia into serving cups and decorate with nuts or granola. Let it cool for an hour in the fridge.
7. Serve the Libyan mahalabia with nuts cold or hot as desired.
You can add chocolate spread, cream, or whipped cream after the mahalabia is cooked and whisk it well for consistency. Adjust the amount of sugar from the beginning so that it is not too sweet.
You can decorate the mahalabia with nuts or granola as mentioned above, or with some fresh fruits such as strawberries or blueberries, and it can be served as a light dessert after meals.
